Five insider secrets for living

a frugal life of freedom in an RV!

Jaimie Bruzenak

For the past 17 years, I have been living the RV lifestyle. Half of that was as a full-time RVer with no stick house or homebase. During those full-time years, my late husband, Bill, and I worked only six months a year yet saved more money each year than we had in our stix ‘n brix life. We had no retirement income and were too young to collect Social Security.

Yes, we were disciplined and had higher than average paying seasonal jobs, but the main reason we could spend less and save is that the RV lifestyle is a cheaper way to live. The choices we made too our camping costs down to practically nothing. We paid less in taxes and fees and kept our fuel bills down while seeing some of the most beautiful places in the country.

Fred & Lynne Benjamin

Lynne and Fred Benjamin - snowbirds

"A big grin came across Fred’s face when I told him "I’m not having fun, anymore. Maybe it’s time." Time meant giving up my work; time meant doing something else. He’d been after me for years. For Fred, it meant going on the road. For me, it meant escaping a very disturbing and unhappy work situation. If it was up to Fred, we would jump in the 5th wheel and go! I was excited at the prospect of traveling but I wasn’t sure I could just get up and go.

"Our relationship is and always has been based on what he thinks he wants, what she thinks she wants, and what we can both live with. In this case, the compromise became to upsize our 5th wheel, downsize our belongings and living space, purchase a small secure condo (primarily an expensive storage unit), and I agreed to take a major sabbatical for two years.

"This all happened six months before 9-11. By mid-October the adventure began. We were off to find a place where they didn’t sell show shovels. During that time, we have downsized to a Class C motorhome and traveled in 3 countries, 8 provinces and more than 33 states. We have seen sights and had adventures we never dreamed of, and each of us has found our new passions—Fred works with fellow RVers to iron out their computer challenges and I’m writing and loving it.' Diane - Workamper wannabee

"I loved your book! (Support Your RV Lifestyle!)  I have read many, but yours is the most complete, and it answers the questions that arise in one’s mind. You take the newbie (my husband and me) and explain everything from A to Z.

"We have camped for over 20 yrs but never Workamped. We will be getting our feet wet in January, 2011-I can't wait!! (My hubby retires December, 2010). I will keep your book close to me, I cannot thank you enough!"

Larry & Adrienne BrauerLarry and Adrienne Brauer - full-time RVers

"When we married in 1993, we were pushing 50. Together we had three girls, three boys, and three dogs. We called ourselves the "Brauer Bunch." We both had experience with camping and six months after we were married, we bought a 26-foot, 1977 Winnebago Chieftain. It wasn't expensive but it would give us an idea about how we liked the lifestyle. As it turned out, we didn't like the lifestyle, we loved it. Although retirement was eight years away, we started developing plans for becoming full-time RVers.

"In 2001 we put the house on the market. We gave away our “stuff” to the kids and charities. A few keepsakes went into a rented storage shed.

"People often ask how we like our lifestyle. Well, we love it.  Sometimes people ask how long we plan on maintaining our lifestyle. Our answer is always, when we get tired of it and, after seven  years, that hasn't happened yet."
