Looking Back
Looking Back: Boomers Remember History from the ‘40s to the Present by Kay Kennedy
Looking Back - history as seen through the eyes of those who lived it, with essays by nineteen extraordinary Americans who were there.
Since the ‘40s, Americans have shared a remarkable history, told in this book from the personal perspective of those who witnessed, and sometimes participated in the most life-changing moments of the baby boomer’s era.
The book includes:
- A timeline and recollections of historic events since World War II
- Stories about loss of innocence, such as when assassinations, the civil rights movement, and an unpopular war fueled civil unrest during the ‘60s and the ‘70s
- Moments of great joy and triumph, as when a vaccine to prevent polio was discovered, and an American astronaut became the first to walk on the moon
- Times of great personal trauma and turmoil, as when events like the terrorist attacks in New York and D.C. and later, Hurricane Katrina, drastically altered life as we had known it.
- The horror of witnessing the assassinations of three leading Americans on television within the space of less than five years, including President John F. Kennedy, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and presidential candidate and JFK’s younger brother Robert F. Kennedy.
The book has many personal and poignant stories that recall the turbulent history of the boomer generation. Kay Kennedy writes about her experiences as a student at Little Rock Central High when nine black students were admitted for the first time, a defining event in the civil rights movement. She and the 19 other writers also reveal everything from nostalgic memories of drive-in movies; to touching moments like an Air Force sergeant meeting the first plane delivering Prisoners of War from North Vietnam; and tragic events like when Fidel Castro took over Cuba and changed the lives of a young girl and her family.
In Looking Back, you’ll learn about the triumphs and tragedies that affected all Americans and still define the baby boomer generation today.
